Obituary for Bessie Phillips
Bessie Carson Phillips was born on July 22, 1924 to the late Abraham and Charlotte Hayes Morehead. She departed this life on November 28, 2019.
Bessie was the youngest of nine children. Four brothers (John Henry Irvin, Johnnie Morehead, Wade Allen, Henry Morehead) and four sisters (Pearlie Johnson, Annie Mae Watkins, Rosie Lee Coleman, Mattie Mae Hill) preceded her in death.
She was home-schooled with her siblings before completing high school. She later married Walter Carson and moved to Pontiac, Michigan. While there, she had a long career in the retail industry. Bessie was described as the ideal wife who provided the perfect atmosphere for entertaining friends and family. She made frequent trips to Memphis to visit family and her relatives. Her family and friends anticipated her charm and relished her ever-present smile and light-hearted chuckle.
After celebrating over 30 years of marriage, her husband Walter passed away. Bessie later married Harry Phillips and continued living in Pontiac, Michigan until his death. Due to declining health, Bessie moved to Memphis to live with her sister, Mattie, and niece, Leola Price, who faithfully cared for her for over twenty years.
Bessie worshipped at Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ with her sister and niece until her heath issues prevented her from attending.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are numerous nieces, nephews, and many other caring relatives and friends.
