Charlene Marie Bass-Owens
Born July 11, 1943 in Stanton, TN to the union of John L. and Neely Bass. Early in life, she attended Pearly Gates Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Jackson and received Christ at an early age.
She attended and graduated from Manassas High School in 1961. She later gave birth to her two sons while working at Methodist North Hospital as a Nursing Assistant before later moving to Gary, IN where she met and married her husband Hubert N. Owens. To this union, their daughter Kimalynn was born. She attended Tabernacle COGIC under the leadership of her father in law, the late Elder Jason Owens. While in Gary, she worked at Joyce Sportswear for 27 yrs before the closing of its doors. She then moved back to her hometown of Memphis,TN where she attended Pentecostal Temple COGIC under the leadership of Bishop J.O. Patterson Jr. and Bishop CHM Patterson Sr. She also returned to work at Methodist North Hospital as well as going to do food demonstrations at Costco. The customers would look for her to see what she was cooking for the day. Charlene had a love for making jewelry, doing word finds and watching Family Feud. She returned to Gary,IN to take care of her son where she lived out her last days.
Charlene was the matriarch of her family instilling a strong work ethic, love and honesty into her children. She had a love for her family and friends that was immeasurable.
Charlene departed this life on January 10, 2022. Cherishing her memory are her loving children: 2 sons Darryl (Vanessa) Bass of Memphis, TN, Courtney Bass of Gary, IN and 1 daughter, Kimalynn L. (Nakia) Chinn, Sr.; of Merrillville, IN; 2 granddaughters Darrica Bass and Renicsha Wadley, 3 grandsons, Jordan Bass, Nakia Chinn Jr. and Niklas K. Chinn. Three sisters Bobbie (Cliff) Holliday, Mary Bass and Peggy Bass all of Memphis, TN. Three brothers, John A. Bass of Gary, IN, Willie Bass and Tony (Charlene) Bass of Memphis TN.
She joins in glory her husband Hubert N. Owens, her baby sister Wilma J. Bass Rogers and two of her closest cousins Myrna Askew and Laverne Woods.
Her Earthly Legacy, also includes one aunt, Mattie (John) Kimbrough. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Memphis, TN Visitation will be Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 10:00 am and the funeral will follow at 11:00 am at Serenity Funeral Home

The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your life is still our guide; and though we can not see you, you are always by our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but God calls us one by one the chain will link again.
