Obituary for Vickie Gwin-Tyms

On Saturday, March 8, 1958, a bouncing baby girl by the name of Vickie Lynn Curry was born to Noel Scorza and Verline Curry, the fourth child of that union. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Vickie was baptized at the tender age of ten (August 19680 in a tent effort under Evangelist J. Malcolm Philip. She matriculated in the Indianapolis school system from elementary school through High School where she graduated in 1976 from Broad Ripple High School. After High School she attended Oakwood College (now University) in the Fall of 1976 where she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in 1981.
Vickie loved the Lord and was a devoted charter member of the Word of Life Seventh-day Adventist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. She had the honor of being the very First Lady of WOL. Her love for music, which began at Oakwood College, continued as she would in Word of Life’s Sanctuary Choir and other area Choirs for many years. She wore many hats over the years beginning with being the Cradle Roll teacher for 24 years. The children loved “Teacher” and didn’t want to leave her class when promotion to the Kindergarten class came around. She doted on them, they knew she loved them, and they loved her.” Vickie also served as Women’s Ministry Leader for over 25 years. Sister Myrtle Smith, Bible Worker and spiritual mentor to Vickie (and Donita’s “MiMi”) was instrumental in her life. Vickie was very creative and had a lot of great ideas to engage women around the conference. She began working in the early 1990’s with South Central Conference’s Women’s Ministry and became the West Tennessee leader, serving as a member of the SCC Women’s Ministry Executive Committee for many years.
Vickie was very active in Community Outreach. She was instrumental in beginning the Annual Good Stuff Giveaway, Christmas Toy Drive, among other programs. She served as Church Clerk for over 20 years. She was instrumental in helping single mothers get their GED’s, providing childcare during classes and encouraged them to get a trade to take care of their families.
Vickie was employed by Comfort Inn as Executive Manager for over 35 years. She loved her job and the people she worked with; some were like family to her. Vickie was generous in sharing the benefits available to her. She was always willing to arrange hotel accommodations, host events for her extended family members and dignitaries alike and provide local retreats for the women of Word of Life. She has always been such a spiritual person, helpful and gifted with wit and that beautiful infectious smile. She was an avid reader, loved movies (and popcorn), having fun, laughing, and she enjoyed life. She was a true friend to many, but most of all loved her family.
Vickie’s Christian walk with the Lord continued to her passing, and we look forward to seeing her at the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Long ago Vickie chose Donita Cenell to be her daughter and cherished this blessing all the days of her life. She would often tell friends that Donita saved her when life got hard. Vickie loved dressing young Donita in beautiful clothing, some of which she saved for Diane. She was known for saving things. She made sure that Donita had a Christian education and encouraged her love for singing. Vickie began training Donita for public speaking and singing at the tender age of 2 years old. She often volunteered Donita for various events to push her and build her confidence. Vickie and Donita looked forward every year to Holiday trips back home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, especially to play her role as Christmas Santa. Vickie was an AWESOME grandmother. She cherished her specially chosen name “GRAMMIE.” Dylan and Diane, her beloved grandchildren were the most important in her life and all she talked about. She took pleasure in always bringing ‘Grammie’s Babies’ Surprises,’ and seeing their smiles brought her pure JOY. Her voice and presence are already sorely missed.
On Sabbath, May 23, 2020, Vickie fell asleep in the Lord. Her brother Larry Scorza preceded her in death.
Celebrating her life, but left to miss her dearly are: her only child, a loving and devoted daughter Donita Gwin, of Arlington, TN; her precious mother Verline Curry of Indianapolis, IN; siblings Robert Curry, Shelia Tarver, Shekita Winder and Lee Turner all of Indianapolis, Indiana; two grandchildren – Dylan and Diane (Sugar Baby) Wright; a god-granddaughter Khloe who called her “MiMi”; nieces Tanya Tarver, Teonia Tarver, Pam Cook, Verleta Winder, Lisa Tarver, Shelina Tarver, Shanita Tarver, and nephews John Tarver and Demarcus Scorza, along with several great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and loved ones dear and near to her heart. Also missing her are her closest friends with whom she formed a sister-bond: Michelle Jones and Valarie Griffin; Damion Wright whom she considered her son-in-law; and her life partner and soul mate Tommy Ray, whom she loved dearly.
