Obituary for Spencer D. Turner
Spencer D. Turner, 68, died August 11, 2017.
Spencer D. Turner was born March 19, 1949 to John D. Wilhite and Earline Turner. He departed this life on Friday, August 11, 2017. He was the oldest of four children: Denise, Pamela (Anthony) McCurry, and Jeanette (Gregory) Walton.
Spencer was a proud graduate of Melrose High School, where he was voted the most likely to succeed, alongside his best friend, Arlette Winfield (deceased). He graduated from Melrose in 1967. He was rewarded for his extra efforts: the National Education Development Test Award, and was judged a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Award program. He shared these awards with his other best friend, Brenda J. Sanford Holt. He also shared these awards with many of his classmates who were fellow members of the National Honor Society. After high school Spencer attended college and excelled in mathematics. He returned home to go to work for IBM.
Spencer was married to Joyce Askew, and from that union they had one son, Damon Turner. Spencer spent four years in the Army where he earned the rank of J.A.G. (Judge Advocate General).
Spencer leaves to cherish his memory his loving friend, Bonnie J. Cummings of Memphis, TN. He rekindled his friendship with her at their 40th + high school class reunion, and they remained together until he departed this life.
Spencer confessed his love for Jesus Christ to his sister, Pamela. He shared his reading about Jesus with his family and friends. He would always look up and thank his mother for trying to teach him earlier about the love of God. “He knows that he is a child of God.” He would say that the greatest lesson that he learned about God was his forgiveness.
Spencer was loved my many and will be missed by all who knew him. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving son, Damon; three sisters, Denise of Memphis, TN, Pamela of Jackson TN and Jeanette of Memphis, TN; two brothers-in-law, Gregory and Anthony; two nephews, Antonio and Derrick Humphrey; and a host of loving cousins, great nieces and nephews, other relatives and lifelong friends who will miss him very much.
