Obituaries
Samuel C. Marshall Jr. (affectionately known as Sam Jr.) was born on July 6, 1943 in Memphis, TN in the family homestead in Orange Mound. He graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1961. Sam Jr. joined the U.S Airforce in 1962 and received an honorable discharge in 1969 after several domestic assignments and a 5-year stint in Sapporo, Japan. During his time in the military Sam Jr. got married and had three daughters (Sandra, Dawn and Christina). After the military, Sam Jr. lived and worked in California for a number of years. Upon retiring from Xerox, he relocated back home to Memphis and had a son (Marcus) with his long-term partner, Bernice Johnson.
Sam Jr. was a gregarious man who brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. Whether the topic was sports or politics he always had a strong opinion and communicated lively positions. Conversations were known to go on for hours until someone conceded, usually Sam Jr.’s debate opponent.
Sam Jr. was a sharp dresser back in his day and always wore his “smell goods.” You could find him routinely at the gym and holding court in the sauna laughing and joking with his boys about topics well known and unknown, LOL. The sauna saga usually continued at home with his siblings either on the phone or in person. Sam Jr. cooked infrequently but ate regularly at his favorite restaurants or Bernice’s kitchen! Sam Jr. was an unconventional father who listened intently, was brutally honest and provided sage advice based on his life experiences and views of the ever-changing world. He was an affectionate grandfather who’d never let you go hungry. He never turned down a hug and he never met a seafood platter or a soul food plate that he didn’t like.
Sam Jr. was preceded in death by his parents Samuel C. Marshall Sr. and Ethel (Patrick) Marshall and his sister Jeanette (Marshall) Jackson. He is survived by his children: Sandra Devera Marshall; Dawndavina Shea (Marshall) Eggleston (Royce); San Seviera Christina Marshall; and Marcus Alexander Johnson Marshall (Kamesha); his grandchildren: Sapphira Heller, Sage & Solomon Eggleston, Abigail, Andrew and Angel Johnson Marshall; and great grandchildren: Adrian, Ariana, Adonis and Aymer Bowick; his brothers Anthony Marshall (Brenda) and John Marshall; and his sister MarciaAnn (Marshall) Thornton and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends who will truly miss him.
