Obituary for Richard Andrew Cook Sr.
Richard Andrew Cook, Sr., 86, passed away October 23, 2017 at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House following an extended illness with family by his side. He was predeceased by his ex-wife, Betty Jean Loden Cook; his parents, Albert Alfonso (A.F.) and Alma Cook as well as his siblings: Margaret Creasey, Albert Cook, Shem Cook, Francis Billingsley, Edna Rose Avery, and Ray Cook. He is survived by three sisters: Rebecca Bobbitt, Annie Armstrong, and Christine McNeill; his three children: Gail Cook Akey (Bill) of Germantown, Lynn Cook Clay (Tim) of Germantown, and Richard A. "Drew" Cook, Jr. (Cindy) of Cordova. Known as "Gramps", he also leaves 6 grandchildren: Ian Clay, Hunter Clay, Tyler Clay, Morgan Scudder, Abby Cook and Drake Cook; and 2 great grandchildren: Ellis and Wills Clay. Richard attended Tech High School before receiving his GED. He was inducted into the United States Army on April 5, 1951 and served as a combat engineer until April 21, 1953. Returning home, he began his training as a plumber, eventually working for his brother, Albert. In February 1960, he and his brother, Ray, opened Cook Brothers Plumbing and Heating Company on Broad St. in Memphis. In 1961, Richard became the sole proprietor of Cook Brothers, a business that grew and prospered throughout many years. Richard is a Master Plumber and was an active member of the Memphis Area Plumber's Association. He owned and operated Faucet Parts on Park Avenue and The Craftsman's Supply on Summer and Jackson Avenues. Richard was a member of Cherry Road Baptist Church, and later Central Church, having given a profession of faith around the age of 10 at Madison Heights Methodist Church. Richard was a man who devoted his life and career to his family, children, and grandchildren. His passions included travel, hunting, fishing, motorboats, teaching waterskiing and week-ends at the lake. And, although he didn't do it very well, he also loved dancing, especially with his wife and little girls!
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 9:00-11:00 a.m., with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at Serenity Funeral Home, 1638 Sycamore View Road, Memphis. Burial with U.S. Army Honors will take place at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, in the Rotunda, 4000 Forest Hill Irene Road, promptly at 1:15 p.m. The family expresses deep appreciation to Gwen Hodges for her many years of tireless devotion and care for our father. We are also thankful for the nurses, care partners, and staff at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House who took wonderful and compassionate care of daddy during his extended stay at the hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Baptist Reynolds Hospice House, 1520 West Poplar Ave., Collierville, TN 38017.
