Obituary for Peggy Denise Johnson-Craine
Peggy Johnson-Craine, age 66, died May 9, 2021.

Peggy Johnson-Craine was born into the family of Jesse and Elnora Johnson on June 29, 1954. For many years, she was the baby of the family that consisted of seven siblings, until brother Ronnie was born. Like her siblings, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Brady Johnson. She attended Spring Hill Elementary School and Bartlett High School. She worked for Bituminous Insurance Company for four years and the MED (Regional One Medical Center ) as an Administrative Assistant for nine years. Because she loved children and longed to help them, she attended LeMoyne-Owen College where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and later earned a Master’s Degree and Plus from Trevecca College.

Peggy was joined in marriage to Lester Craine on Oct. 30, 1991. They parented three children, a son who died at birth and two daughters, Petrina L. Craine, MD and Ellenore P. Craine. Peggy epitomized the expressions, “still waters run deep,” for though she was a quiet spirit on the surface, she was a profound individual whose thoughts and feelings surfaced in many ways. Early in life, she was drawn to writing, first to poetry, having two of her poems published in a poetry magazine, and secondly to fiction, having written an unpublished novel over the course of several years. She had a great love for literature and history, which morphed into an urgent and exciting desire to teach reading, a subject at which she excelled in amazing ways, for she strongly believed that young minds, when stimulated and motivated early enough would reach unimaginable heights.

Peg was raised in a strongly-bonded family that molded her character. These strong influences included a love for the Lord, love for family, sacrifice, endurance, truth (even when it hurts), dedication, and faith. All of these proved to be invaluable qualities for this journey called “Life.” Being the exceptional mother that she was, she passed these traits on to her two daughters as she prepared them for life. Even though Peggy’s long-term illness limited her ability to achieve all that she desired, it could never dampen her faith in God. In fact, she grew closer to Him in countless ways, a testament she shared with others. Her private, routine study of the Scripture, became one of her great comforts, as was church, Life School, and Bible Study whenever she was able to attend.

Peggy will always be loved, remembered, cherished, and missed beyond words by her husband, Lester, her two daughters, Petrina and Ellenore, her mother, Elnora Johnson, her five sisters-- Dorothy Smith, Hazel Moore, Joann Graham, Carmelita Broussard, and Terry Bolton-- her brother, Ronnie Johnson-- and her brother-in-laws, Roger Graham and Clifton Moore as well as her nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, church members, and all who knew and loved her. We all faithfully await our joyful reunion with her.
