Obituary for Paul Joseph Vescovo
Paul Joseph Vescovo, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. A prominent Memphian best known as owner of Paul's Tailors on Beale Street. His style and techniques attracted well known people such as B.B. King, Rufus Thomas, Elvis, Dianne Carroll, Dianna Washington, James Edwards, Gatemouth Brown, and locals such as former Congressman Harold Ford and John Ford. He was a second generation Italian who was a proud American; he served as President of 18 charity boards, and he was a tireless civil rights worker during the l960's and treated everyone equally and with respect. He was a radio dispatcher in WWII and was shot down on his 35th mission, and was a prisoner of war for two years, which included an historic struggle in the Death March.
One son, Paul Vescovo Jr. preceded him in death. He leaves his wife of 30 years, Shirley Lee Vescovo; his daughter, Debra Vescovo Byrd (Bobby); his stepson and closest friend, George Bearden; stepson, Greg Bearden; stepdaughter, Debbie Mouyal (Gil); grandchildren, Robert Byrd, Lauren Byrd and Justin Byrd, all of Memphis; plus his dear friend and caregiver, Kathleen "Kat" Jackson.
Visitation Sunday, July 2, 3-5 p.m. and service on Monday, July 3, at 10:00 a.m. at Serenity Funeral Home. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, with Military Honors.
