Obituary for Osie Lee Griffin
Osie Lee Griffin affectionately known as “Brother” was born November 11, 1943 in Lynch, Kentucky to the late Osie Griffin and Mary Bing. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ashar Yehuda (Catherine Mckay), His children, Osie Lee Griffin Jr., Timothy Vaughn Griffin and Salesa Dawn Griffin.
Osie grew up in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, NY. He attended Boys High H.S., He studied Pre-Med at Howard University and later gained his Masters of Education at John Jay College. Osie was a member of the New York Police Department as a young man. He retired from his duties at the 88th precinct in Brooklyn, NY after 20 years of dedicated service. He then worked at his childhood Elementary School which was PS 27. He taught History, Music and Physical Education during his time there. He later became a Professor at the University of Memphis.
Osie had many loves in his life, one of which was music. He adored teaching, playing and especially singing. Osie had a beautiful voice and would sing at any given opportunity. He enjoyed several years performing in Off Broadway plays, and was proud of his "extra's role" in Death Wish the movie. Osie was a member of Calvary Church located in Red Hook section of Brooklyn where he was a musician, played the organ and sang in the choir. Another joy was Track and Field. Osie ran track as a young man, he coached at “Atlas”, “Police Athletic League” and formed his own team called “Diamond Track Club”.
Osie was a brilliant man, his knowledge knew no boundaries and he had an appreciation for learning and correcting people. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy. Osie was an Encyclopedia of knowledge. If you wanted to know something, you simply asked Osie.
Although, he was a serious and stoic man, Osie had a great sense of humor and a very distinctive laugh. He was a Husband, a devoted father and a friend to many. He lived a full life and touched many people. His memories and legacies will live on in the lives of his loved ones.
Osie leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Camile Griffin, his daughters Naquawna Jones (son-in-law, Jeffery Jones), Nyeisha Griffin, Jessica Bennett and Ashley Griffin, his Son Randi Griffin, his grand-daughters, Calesa Gray, Xela Bethea, Victoria Jackson, Jada Jones and Nathaniel Jackson.
