Obituary for Norman Albert Carter
Norman Albert Carter was born on July 26, 1945, to the late Eddie Carter and Gertrude Willis Carter in Hale County, AL. Having been reared in a Christian home, Norman dedicated his life to Christ at an early age and joined the Saint Paul Baptist Church, Demopolis, AL under the pastorage of the Reverend C. C. Ellis. Embraced and loved by the village, he graduated from U.S. Jones High School in Demopolis, AL in 1963. Seeking employment, he moved to Cleveland, OH where he worked until he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1965. He was a Proud Vietnam Veteran and received many medals of Honor and awards.
After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corps, Norman returned to Cleveland and attended The Westside Institute of Technology, earning a certificate in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. He became a member of the Pipefitter’s Union Local 120 and was a Journeymen Pipefitter. Norman worked for many companies throughout his career and was always the Lead Welder on the Jobsite. His last assignment before his retirement was Facilities Engineer for University Hospitals of Cleveland (OH).
While attending a Church Service in Cleveland, he met Bettie Jean Knight and the two were united in Holy Matrimony on May 31, 1969. Together, they forged a productive life, contributing to and participating in civic, social, religious and sport endeavors in the community. After retiring, Norman and Bettie travelled extensively, visiting interesting sites in the U.S. and foreign countries. To family and friends, they were the “Traveling Duo.” In addition to his love of travel, he enjoyed passing the time with his family and telling stories of his childhood and work experiences. He was an avid fan of all Cleveland sports teams, especially The Cleveland Browns and was known for his high fashion sense and love of vehicles.
In Cleveland, he was a dedicated member of Second Lakeview Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as Male Chorus Member and Trustee until he moved to Tennessee in 2018. He enjoyed attending worship services with his family at Hope Church in Cordova, TN.
Norman and Bettie moved to Cordova, TN in the fall of 2018 to be closer to their kids and the sunshine. He often spoke of not missing the snow in Cleveland. They also celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on June 1, 2019.
After a well-lived life, Norman gained his ticket to heaven on Saturday, September 19 at 12:26 pm, following a short illness.
Norman leaves to cherish his memories, a loving wife of 51 years, Bettie; daughter, Nicole (Lou Jr.) of Cordova, TN; and his grandson, Lou III, known as Trey of Cordova, TN; sons, Duane of Bartlett, TN, Caleb Adams and Shaketia Broadnax (Duane); his siblings, Steve Carter of Denver, CO; Bernice Richardson (Robert) of Huntsville, AL; Richard Carter (Ernestine) of Huntsville, AL; Robert Carter (Angernette) of Selma, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews and many of their children’s friends who came to claim Norman as their own “Dad.”
