Obituaries
Moriece Yates was born on July 1, 1928 to the late Julia Wilson and Walter Lee Yates in Prichard, MS. He was known to many as “Bud” and “Uncle Bud”.
In 1947, Moriece married the love of his wife, Everleaner Yates, (nee McDuffie). Moriece moved his family to Memphis, TN where they established a loving home for their growing family. Moriece accepted Christ under the pastorate of the late Rev. Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks and served as a faithful member of Greater Middle Baptist Church. For many years, he served as a Deacon, Trustee and member of the Male Chorus.
Moriece worked for the City of Memphis Public Works Division for 39 years. Moriece participated in the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Worker’s strike and march demanding better working conditions and higher pay. Moriece was honored with a Salutation from the late Mayor of Memphis, Richard “Dick” Hackett, for his outstanding and devoted years of service.
Moriece was a devoted husband and father. He was always there when needed and instilled a sense of respect, honesty and a love for the Lord in his family. Moriece enjoyed yard work and always kept an immaculate yard. He enjoyed watching baseball and spending time with family.
Moriece was preceded in death by his parents, Julia Wilson and Walter Lee Yates; 2 Brothers, Robert Lee Yates and Ruben Edward “R.E.” Davis and 6 Sisters, Lula Mitchell, Maple Sanders, Elizabeth Wilson, LeDelma Yates, Goldie Mae Davis and Rose Davis; 2 of his children, Juliette Thomas and Larry Yates; his grandson, Tory “Petey” Yates; his great-granddaughter, Mia Bills.
Moriece leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of 76 years, Everleaner Yates; his children, Mayo Wilson; Faye Yates; Jackie (Jocelyn) Yates; Joe Willie Yates; Debra (Timothy) Farmer; Barbara (Reginald) Wilkins; Judy Yates; Vickie Deaner; Maurie (Mario) Edwards; and his grandchildren Martin Yates; Tony Yates; Tiffany (Mark) McNeal; Marlon Yates; Kendra (Everette) Walker; Courtney Yates; Demetria Yates; Johnsie (Raun) Little; Christian (Tiffany) Yates; Devenn Owens; Jillian Curtis; Joseph Yates; Jaleesa Yates; Malarie Yates; Chauncey Yates; Kayah Yates; Jeremy Anderson; and a host of great grandchildren, family and friends.
