Obituary for Mitchell Brown McKinley
Mitchell McKinley Brown, 69, passed November 20, 2013. He was born in Memphis, TN, on February 9, 1944 to the late Vertia Turner Brown and McKinley Brown. He graduated from Carver High School in 1962. He then enlisted into the US Air force where he served as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician. After his tour he graduated from Tennessee State University where he obtained an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. He moved to Schenectady, NY where he served as project engineer with General Electric from 1970-1979. He also served as chief mechanical engineer at Williams-Russell and Johnson Inc., Atlanta. He also held the positions of senior systems engineer, in thesystems engineering division atGeneral Electric Company, Arlington, VA, of senior project manageranddeputy director, in theproject management division of theDepartment of Public Works, Fairfax, VA and of Assistant Director of Construction for Montgomery County Public Schools, Rockville, MD. He later expanded his career and received recognition as an independent engineer and received recognition for his work performance from General Electric and Fairfax County, VA. Mitchell was committed to education. He obtained two master's degrees in mechanical engineering also executive management certification in E-commerce and business management from Georgetown University. He was an avid tennis player, photographer and electronic media specialist. He was webmaster for TSU Alumni Association. He loved documenting family events and spending time with family and friends.He is survived by his sisters, Marva B. Williams, Wayne J. Brown, Angella Battle Loyse Brown of Memphis, and LaVera Wingfield of Shaker Heights, OH; one brother Charles E. Brown of Memphis; a dear lifelong friend, Sandra Culmer; and daughter of affection, Eryn Culmer; and a large extended family many friends. Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. onWednesday, December 4, at West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill-Irene Road, Memphis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Tennessee State Alumni Association. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
