Lizzie Emma Dickerson Morton, affectionately known as “Aunt Sissy, Granny, Great Granny, Mother Morton”, was born on October 14, 1923 in Rossville, TN. Her loving parents were the late Lonnie and Fannie Dickerson. She was joined in matrimony to the late Charlie B. Morton in Fayette County, TN in 1944. They were married for over thirty-five years until his passing.
Later she moved to Binghampton, in Memphis, where she was affectionately known as the neighborhood Mother. On most days you would find her in the kitchen preparing meals for her big family, as well as, anyone else who was hungry. Her signature dishes included hot water cornbread, greens and fried peach pies. She loved her family, especially her children. She spent many years working outside of the home, as a result, she built relationships with the Chase, Kirsch and Leavy families.
Mother Morton accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Luke Church in Rossville, TN. Her ministry included Ushering and serving on the Mother’s Board. Many years later, she joined Mississippi Blvd Christian Church where she was active in the J. E. Walker Life Group and Golden Friends Senior Outreach Ministry.
Our Matriarch earned her wings on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Baptist East Hospital at the age of 97.
Mother Morton was the mother of four children: Charlie, Vennie, Robert (“Red”) and Lizzie. She also raised four nieces and nephews: Fannie, Johnny, Mandy and Jardie.
She was proceeded in death by her Husband, Charlie Morton; two sons: Robert and Charlie Jr.; one stepdaughter Estelle Shorter; three brothers: John, Lonnie and L.T. Dickerson; two sisters: Frances Dickerson and Frankie Montgomery.
She leaves to carry on her legacy, two daughters: Vennie (Adolph) Robinson and Lizzie (Leroy) Jenkins; four beloved nieces and nephews that she raised as her own: Fannie (Michael) Jackson, Olympia Fields, IL, Mandy (Terry) Childress, Johnny (Martha) Morton, Jardie (Cathy) Bailey; one brother, Elder James Dickerson, Virginia Beach, VA; one daughter-in-law, Georgia Morton; 17 Grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; a loving friend, Ms. Eddie Blackwell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loyal friends.
