Obituary for Lena Payne
Lena Payne, 77, died February 21, 2019.

Lena Brooks Payne was born on July 1, 1941 to the late William (Shine) Brooks and Glennie Hull Brooks in Enid, Mississippi. In 1959 she was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life Jesse E. Payne Sr. From this union they had five children Jesse Jr, Eilean, Tony Sr, Phyllis and Laquita. She was a devoted wife of fifty nine years and wonderful nurturing mother to her five children.
Lena Brooks Payne gave her life to Christ at a early age at Speed Street Church of God in Christ. In 1978 she joined Greater Community Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the great late Bishop W.L Porter, later would be under the leadership of Bishop Brandon B. Porter. Lena introduced all of her children to Christ. Lena served as a faithful member of Greater Community Temple COGIC for over 40 years. She served in many capacities Sunday school teacher, greeter, and women’s chorus. She loved the lord and was positive role model to women once receiving a award for woman of the year from Greater Community Temple COGIC for her exceptional service and diligence to the church. She was a woman of holiness, a woman of prayer, and most of all she was a example of true woman of GOD.
She was employed by Shelby County Schools and retired after 20 years of service and was considered to be an exemplary employee. Lena loved her job as a school bus driver and many children that she drove remembers the loving caring bus driver that took them to and from school. She enjoyed cooking, walking for exercise daily, gardening and being a homemaker. Lena had a infectious smile and a beautiful spirit that will be remembered.
On February 21,2019 God said well done my good and faithful servant and called Lena home .She was preceded in death by six sisters and five brothers. Willeva Brooks Williams (Clarence), Ethel Brooks Williams, Essie Maude Brooks (Willie), Ruby Nieal Brooks Cozy (Alonzo), Velma Brooks Oliver (James), and Glenora Brooks Payne (Frank Sr). Twoy Brooks, B.O Brooks (Lucille), Chester Brooks (Bernell), Perry B. Brooks (Theora) and Elmer Brooks.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Jesse Earl Payne Sr, Two sons Jesse Payne Jr.(Clementine) and Tony Payne Sr.(LeShawn). Three daughters Eilean Payne Drake, Phyllis Whitmore (Venson Sr), and Laquita Payne. Two sister Elizabeth Wirt (David) and Vera Momon (Clayborn). Nine grandchildren Venson Jr, Brian, Tony Jr, Jessica, Cameron, D’Vonte, Destiny, Alexis, and Tyler. One great grandchild-Amya and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whose lives were touched by her.
