Helen Beatrice Stevenson Patterson was born on April 25, 1947, in Wild Wood, Arkansas, to Willie “Sonny Boy” Stevenson, Jr. and Estella Stevenson. Helen embraced her faith at an early age under the leadership of Reverend Vessel at Morning Grove Baptist Church in Lakeview, AR, and received her education in the Lakeview, Arkansas school system. She later met and married Roosevelt Patterson, and together they were blessed with three sons: Victor, Anthony, and Patrick. After moving to Memphis, Tennessee, Helen dedicated many years to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis before retiring.
Known affectionately as the “Snow Cone Lady” in her neighborhood, Helen was an entrepreneur at heart, delighting children with her treats. She had a passion for cooking and a sharp sense of humor, cherished by family and friends. Her love for word search books, crossword puzzles, and bubble gum was matched only by her appreciation for gospel and blues music.
Helen peacefully departed this life on April 10, 2024, at Methodist North Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; Mr. Willie “Sonny Boy” Stevenson Jr. and Mrs. Estella Baker, her Maternal Grandparents John and Rebecca Strickland, her Paternal Grandparents Magnolia Moss and Willie “Red” Stevenson, Sr., and Step-Grandmother Gertrude Stevenson, her brother George H. Wright, Jr., and her sister Louise R. Frazier.
Helen leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories, survived by her three sons: Victor (Pam) Patterson of Snellville, GA, Anthony Patterson of Memphis, TN, and Patrick (Shelia) Patterson of Memphis, TN. She is also survived by two brothers: Verdell (Linda) Stevenson of Memphis, TN, and Robert Wright of West Helena, AR; four sisters: Benella Armstrong of Carson, CA, Betty Woods of LaDera Height, CA, C. Annette (Rosivale) Grace of Seattle, WA, and Benita Wright (Jose) Otero of Statham, GA. Additionally, Helen had four stepbrothers: Willie K. III, Donell, Robert, and Earnest Lee; and four stepsisters: Vea, Dorothy, Christine, and Joyce. She was a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, and she is remembered fondly by a host of nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Among them, Willie “Billy” Webster which held a special place as her lifelong friend.
