Obituary for Ernest Lee Gunn
Earnest Lee Gunn, was the second child born to Marshall Gunn and Mattie Crawley Gunn on March 6, 1939 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. He went to Heaven on January 2, 2020. Became a faithful Christian at the age of 12 at the High Street Church of Christ in Tuscumbia, Alabama.
Earnest graduated from the historical Trenholm High School in Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1957; He continued his education at Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN. earning his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and he went to the University of Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo to earn a Master’s in Business Administration. He was a P.H.A. Mason, member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and a member of the Tennessee State alumni Association.
Earnest entered the Air Force in 1961 and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1983. He earned the Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; the Distinguished Service Medal; The National Defense Service Medal; The Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster. He served in several locations worldwide, including Madrid, Spain: Udorn, Thailand; and short tours on the SAC Inspection Team in Germany, England, and the Philippines.
Upon retirement, he served at the Memphis Defense Depot as a civilian for 10 years and the Shelby County Government as General Services Director and Deputy CAO, under Mayors, Jim Rout and A.C. Wharton.
His most gratifying service was in the Lord’s church where he served as a deacon at the Bellevue Church of Christ in Bellevue, Nebraska and Holmes Road Church of Christ where he served as an elder.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Marjorie; three sons, Brandon Craig, Jeffrey Kyle and Anthony Reynolds; three grandchildren, Xavier, Somer and Morgan Gunn; two great grandchildren, Rylan and Miracle Gunn; one sister, Vivian (Curtis) Morris of Memphis, Tn. and Wendell (Linda) Gunn of Stamford, Connecticut. He had many dear, loving cousins in Alabama, Illinois, Texas and Tennessee.
