Dorothy Jean Johnson went home to be with her Lord on Friday April 10, 2020. She was just a week shy of her 71st birthday when God called her home as reward for all she had done here on Earth. Dorothy’s love of her God, her family, and her friends could never be in doubt to any who met her even briefly.
Dorothy was born April 16, 1949, in Sunflower, Mississippi, to James Clarence Johnson and Lillian R. Johnson (nee Daniels). She would become one of twelve siblings who all knew her as strong spirited and vastly independent. In that fashion, although she was already part of a large family, Dorothy went on to make lifelong friendships to such an extent that any outsider would never know where family ended, and friends began.
Dorothy’s closest bonds began early with a move from Mississippi to Gary, Indiana where she would graduate from Froebel High School in 1967 with friends to this day: Doris Mallet, Loretta Adams, and Mary Graham. She eventually moved to Chicago where she would work for Dr. Scholl. The company was then acquired by Schering Plough which brought her to Memphis where she picked up another sister to this day in Linda Kimble Risby. After leaving Plough, Dorothy also worked for Kraft Foods, Home Depot, and eventually Cargill from which she retired. At each stop along the way, Dorothy touched lives in immeasurable ways, as evidenced by the great outpouring of love the family has seen since her passing.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents: James Clarence Johnson Sr. and Lillian R. Johnson (nee Daniels). She is survived by her only child Adam Johnson and his wife Donna Johnson, their children Aloi Johnson, Anais Johnson, and Addison Johnson, and her only great grandchild Jaiden Miguel Wright (son of Anais Johnson). She also leaves behind a loving and close-knit church family in Get Recovered Ministries Christian Church, pastored by Rev. Harold Bates Sr. and Evangelist Phyllis Bates.
In addition, Dorothy has been both preceded and survived by her siblings, each listed in order of birth as follows: Georgia Marie Roberts Fullilove, deceased, Elizabeth Theresa Roberts Smith, living in Baltimore, George Booker T. Roberts Jr.- deceased, Lula Mae Roberts Root, deceased, Joe Louis Roberts, living in Buffalo, NY, Lillian Ruth Roberts, deceased, William Roberts, living in New Hampshire, Dorothy Jean Johnson, decedent, Lillia Mae Johnson Smith, deceased, James Clarence Johnson Jr., living in Douglas, AZ, Vanessa Diane Johnson Thomas, living in Chicago, IL, Sandra Nadine Johnson Ibe, deceased. (The decision was made to list all twelve siblings including Dorothy so they could all be together once more)
