Obituary for Cynthia Louise Young
Cynthia Louise Young

January 14, 1948-September 19, 2015

Cynthia Louise Young was born on January 14, 1948 as a gift from God to the late Victor J. Young and Louise Davis in Youngstown, Ohio. She graduated from The Rayen High School in 1966 and continued her education at Atlantic Personal Airline School in Hartford, CT. After finishing airline school, Cynthia worked for National Airlines in Washington, DC and then she moved to Pittsburgh and worked for Allegheny, now USAirways, for 30 years.
Cynthia loved life and loved people. Her career embraced both of these traits as she worked as an airline reservationists and then as a service provider for youth who had dropped out of high school. Her last job, after retiring from USAirways was as a counselor for Three Rivers Youth. At Three Rivers she worked with her husband Edward to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. Cynthia was an adventuresome woman, and she loved to travel and as a reservationists for US Airways, she could and did travel the world. Most often accompanied by her husband and/or her daughter, mother, stepdaughter, her extended family members and her USAirways friends. Whoever she traveled with and wherever she traveled, you could count on her being the first to sing, dance, clap—whatever the situation called for, she was always the life of the party. She was enthusiastic, energetic and charismatic. Her joy in whatever she did caused others to appreciate their experiences even more.
Cynthia as a youth was a member of Price Memorial AME Zion church. As an adult she was a faithful member of Macedonia Church of Pittsburgh and subsequently at Greater Imani Church in Memphis.
Cynthia and her first husband Frederick W. Hill brought into the world her greatest joy in life, their daughter, Adrienne Cynthia (Hill) Settles. Cynthia, who waited until her mid 30’s to have a child, often commented that “if she had known motherhood was so wonderful, she would have started earlier and Adrienne would have siblings.” Cynthia was a loving and dedicated mother who devoted most of her energy and time to Adrienne in her formative years. She embraced as her own her stepson, Michael Justice and stepdaughter, Teisha Weatherly showering them with love and attention.
In May of 2006, Cynthia married her love and partner of 20+ years, Edward Weatherly. These kindred souls shared a love of jazz, travel, dancing and enjoyed many happy years together. They were both very silly and were known for laughing and having a great time no matter where they went. In 2007 she and Edward moved to Memphis, Tennessee where Cynthia, being Cynthia, soon developed a group of new friends. She met a woman who was a member of “Sisters in Motion”, a walking and running group which Cynthia promptly joined. With Sisters in Motion, Cynthia took her love of walking to a new level by becoming a marathon and half-marathon junkie. Entering only races that awarded medals to finishers, she walked in 30+ races—completing two full marathons in March of this year.
An avid reader and book club member for over 30 years, Cynthia talked her way into a book club that “was not accepting new members” and became the heart and soul of the group, preparing meals for their Academy Awards Red Carpet Soirees.
Cynthia’s grandchildren captured her heart, and she requested to be called “Nana Honey.” Cynthia had a joy of life that was contagious. She spread joy and love wherever she went. She was known for bringing special tokens of love to holiday dinners, picking you and/or your child up whenever needed, flying to Maryland to baby-sit her grandchildren, volunteering to help with church functions, whatever you needed she was there with her beautiful smile to help you.
Cynthia was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late February of this year and maintained a very strong faith during her fight. She never complained about anything and she would often tell her friends and family that she would have only good days and better days never bad ones. Cynthia fought bravely, and passed peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 19, 2015, at home with her husband and daughter.
Friends and family will always remember her full-body laugh, her beautiful green eyes, her zest for life and her love for her family, especially her daughter and grand children.
Cynthia leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Louise Young, her husband Edward Weatherly, her daughter Adrienne Settles, son-in-law Brandon Settles, step-children Michael Justice, Bryce, Teisha, Adam and Mark Weatherly, grandchildren, Alexander and Casey Settles, and her cousin-sister Debra Davis, along with a host of other family members and friends. Her father Victor J. Young who passed in December 1968, her maternal grandparents Robert and Bernice Davis and her paternal grandparents Henry and Ethel Young preceded her in death.
Throughout her life, she was loving, giving, effervescent and had a great sense of humor. She loved her family and friends well. She loved butterflies and while here on earth she embodied the beauty of a butterfly, she now has taken on eternal beauty and glory. She lives on in the lives of her children and grandchildren and in the hearts of those whose lives she touched. Cynthia leaves a wonderful legacy of love for her family and friends to cherish.

Services will be Saturday September 26th at Price Memorial AME Zion Church. The viewing will be from 9-10 am and then the funeral will start at 10 am.
