Charles Schawarm Caviness, 89, died December 17, 2019.

Resident of Memphis, Tennessee

Charles S. Caviness, 89, passed away on December 17, 2019, at home in Memphis, Tennessee, surrounded by family and his loving wife of 67 years, Pearline Caviness.
Charles was born on June 29, 1930, in Bartlett, Tennessee to Marie and Walter Caviness. He grew up in Bartlett, Tennessee with 7 brothers and sisters whom he loved. Charles accepted Christ at the early age of 12 years and was baptized under the leadership of J.F. Collins of First Baptist Church of Bartlett. He continued to serve as a faithful member and later as an ordained Deacon.
He graduated from Geeter High School then ventured on to join the Army in 1951. He married the love of his life, Pearline in 1952, in Hernando, Mississippi while he served in the Korean War.
He had a miraculous career as he served as one of our nation’s heroes in the Korean, Vietnam, and European Theater Wars. He was very successful where he earned 5 Bronze Stars for his fearless combat. His success gained him rank as a First Sergeant Commander and he retired with an Honorable Discharge.
Charles and Pearline settled in Memphis, Tennessee and had one son, Joe C. Caviness whom they cherished. Charles had pursued education in the area of Business Administration at the University of Miami. He had a lengthy and flourishing career as teacher at Whitehaven and Manassas high schools where he found an interest in teaching ROTC. He was admired and loved by his students and remembered for his strong dedication to teach his ROTC Drill Teams with the skills he learned from his military career.
Charles will be remembered for having strong love for his family and the Lord as well as his love for fishing and teaching.
Charles is preceded in death by his 6 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Pearline Caviness, his son, Joe C. Caviness, and his sister Telitha Fisher of Memphis, Tennessee. Charles will be greatly missed by his 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews as well as other family and friends.
Graveside Services with military honors will be held at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Serenity Funeral Home on Friday, December 27, 2019 at 10:15am. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Bartlett in Bartlett, Tennessee from 4pm to7pm.
