A Portrait of Life

Christ Paid the Price (Gal. 3:13-15 NIV)

Audie Wayne Couch

On November 10, 1957, God granted our family with a special gift, the birth of Audie Wayne Couch, affectionately known as, "JOHN WAYNE". AUDIE WAYNE (sometimes called "Red") was the baby son of the family. Happy and down-right gorgeous best describes Lil' Audie Wayne as a child. Although he was the baby son, he had no problem fitting in with his two older brothers, Donnie, and Joe-Joe. They were inseparable! He was too young to realize if his older brothers got caught for being mischievous and he was involved; he would get a "good spanking" as well. Audie-Wayne didn't fear the spankings, because he had a lot’s of courage; and to him they were down-right worth it. The bond between the Couch Brothers could never be broken. Speaking of courage, John Wayne was not the biggest, nor tallest kid in the Magnolia Community where he grew up, but he was well respected. Just ask some of the older boys who challenged him, on and off the basketball court. He stood his ground and theirs too.

Audie enlisted into the United States Marine Corps after graduating from High School. He returned home and worked for various companies. But, the "tugging in his spirit," would not let him continue. Wayne finally realized his “purpose” in life; was to help others. He had discovered that God had blessed him with a "giving-heart" and "talented-hands.” His short-nubby fingers could do almost anything! But it was the business of auto-mechanics that fulfilled him most. Audie Wayne was determined "IF IT'S BROKE, I CAN FIX IT" He would often say, "CRANK IT UP" and instantly he could diagnose the problem and fix it. Over the years Audie Wayne became a Master of the craft. He had no professional training, and no technical schooling, because JESUS CHRIST, the Master Craftsman had equipped him was all the skills he would ever need.

Word spread rapidly about John Wayne's knowledge, mechanical abilities and “low-low” prices for car repairs throughout the Magnolia, Castalia, Binghamton Communities. It wasn’t long before his work would be known throughout the city of Memphis. Audie Wayne literally turned the home-house at 2074 Lowell Avenue into a car repair shop. Imagine the threat this caused for the local car repair businesses in the nearby areas. They determined the best way to stop him from taking their customers would simply be, to offer him a job working for them – but we all know that didn’t happen. Audie enjoyed his own schedule; working his own hours and working from home. He became our family's first entrepreneur. However, his bank account didn’t reflect his business success because, when the work was done, they person would ask “what-you-charge?" He would say, “whatever you wanna give me.”
But, because of AUDIE WAYNE’s (giving heart) would say, "You don’t owe me anything…I DID IT FOR FREE.”

Audie Wayne Couch leaves to cherish his memories his mother Ruthie Mae Worthy, three sisters; Aubrey Jean Trass (Los Angeles, CA), Glenda Faye Ward, (Memphis, TN), Mae (Sylvester) Coleman (Snellville, GA); two brothers; Alfred "Donnie" Couch and Beverly "Joe-Joe" Couch (both of Memphis); cousin-brother, Shaun Suggs, sons; Tarence (Katherine) Dewayne "Ton-Ton" Branch; Darrius Jemarcus Couch; one daughter, Natasha Couch; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one aunt Earline Faulkner (Memphis, TN); a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, cousins, one great-great grandniece (A’drea Michelle Banton) and a long time companion, Sandra Mabon.
