Obituary
April Joy Clark Grims was born on May 4, 1975 in St. Louis Park, MN to Norman and Georgene Clark. She was baptized in the Episcopal Church. April attended school in Cleveland, MS, graduating from Cleveland High School in 1993. While in high school she was an honor student and a member of the CHS Marching Band’s Dance Line. April continued her education at Tougaloo College and Delta State University, and graduated from Southwest Community College with a degree in nursing.
April’s first nursing job was at Kirby Pines Retirement Community’s Alzheimer’s Unit. Not only did April blossom at this job assignment, so did her patients—many of whom thrived under her care, and came to respond almost exclusively to her. After several successful years, April moved on to Eagle Medical Staffing where she stayed and continued to care with compassion until her illness prevented her from working.
April was married only briefly, but was blessed with the joy of her life as a result—her son, Reyhan. She was a phenomenal mother, always teaching by example, and always “hands-on.” Rare was the time one was without the other, and rare was the time she was not teaching him something. As a result, he is an “A” student at Bartlett Ninth Grade Honors Academy.
In addition to being an outstanding mother, April was a voracious reader; a writer of poetry; and a jewelry designer. She actively pursued her interest in books through various book clubs and writing groups, and considered herself at least an amateur movie critic. She also found the love of her life when she met her fiancé, Israel, a few years ago.
Those who knew April are quick to speak of her spirited nature, her wit and compassion, and her fearless courage. After a courageous battle with illness, April’s flame was extinguished on October 7, 2014.
She leaves to cherish her memory her parents, Norman and Georgene Clark; her son, Reyhan Grims; her brother, Justin Clark; and her fiancѐ, Israel Martinez, Jr. She will also be missed by aunts and uncles: Thelma Rush, Vicksburg, MS; Leonard (Jacquelyn ) Brown, Tualatin, OR; Ottis (Mattie) Clark, Tchula, MS; Edmond (LaShaunkita) Clark, Tchula, MS; Leon (Elizabeth) Clark, Jackson, MS; Inez Rushing, Jackson, MS; Richard (Brenda) Clark, Memphis, TN; Marvis Martin, Jackson, MS; Louis (Yvonne) Clark, Tchula, MS; and Kay (Winfred) McNeil, Jackson, MS. Also left to cherish her memory are numerous cousins, including special cousins Kimathi Clark, Aiea, Hawaii; and Bindley Williams, Stuttgart, Germany; as well as many friends, including childhood friend Katrena Birge Thompson (Reyhan’s godmother) and nursing schoolmate and friend, Angel Shiels Spencer.

Through it all, her faith never wavered, and those who love her take comfort in knowing that she is now in GOD’S hands.
